Childproofing Contractors Flooding Home Home improvement Home inspections Mowing grass Plumbing Pools FLOODING Also see: PLUMBING IF YOU HAVE A PLUMBING PROBLEM AND FLOODING IS OCCURRING OR THREATENED: ____ Secure water near the leak (e.g., under the sink) or at the main valve for the residence ____ Determine if the problem item is still under warranty If the item is still under warranty: ____ Determine who is permitted to work on the item ____ Contact your insurance company to determine if the damage is covered IF YOU LIVE IN AN AREA SUSCEPTIBLE TO FLOODING: ____ Obtain flood insurance ____ Consider buying a pump ____ Consider having sand bag materials on hand ____ Decide what you would do if flooding appeared likely, e.g.: - Move items upstairs ____ Decide which items you would take with you if you had to evacuate IF FLOODING APPEARS LIKELY SOON: ____ Move items to area in house which is least likely to be flooded ____ Move items to another location (besides your residence) which is less likely to be flooded Back to Top MOWING GRASS WELL BEFORE MOWING: ___ Consider getting a mulching mower or getting a mulching blade for the mower you have - adds nitrogen to grass - better for environment (less grass going to landfill) - reduces need for fertilizing - you won't have to deal with clippings If you need to get gas from a gas station: Before taking off the cap of the can - to avoid an explosion due to static electricity igniting gas fumes: ___ Touch the can to the ground ___ Touch the gas pump nozzle to the can ___ Don't carry the gas can in the trunk SHORTLY BEFORE MOWING: ___ Wait until grass is dry ___ Ensure blade is not dull - a dull blade make mowing more difficult and stresses the grass ___ Set mowing height to no less than 2 inches - cutting grass too short can cause it to grow faster and can encourage growth of weeds ___ Fill the fuel tank - you shouldn't refill the tank when the engine is hot ___ Walk through entire area to be mowed to check for items and debris (e.g., stones, twigs) which could be thrown by the mower and injure someone and/or could damage the mower ___ Ensure there will be no people, especially children, too close to the operating mower ___ Wear: - Protective shoes - Long pants - Safety glasses - Ear plugs WHILE MOWING: ___ Never reach under the mower while it's operating ___ Don't leave an operating mower unattended ___ Be especially careful on any slopes If grass is long: ___ Only cut approx. 1/3 of the length at one time If using a riding mower: ___ Drive up and down slopes vice sideways If the engine starts to vibrate: ___ Stop immediately to determine the cause If you run out of fuel: ___ Wait until the engine cools down before refueling REGULARLY: Every few weeks: ___ Check the blades for excessive wear or damage Twice a year: ___ Sharpen blades Every two years: ___ Replace blades WORKING ON A MOWER: Before: ___ Disconnect the spark plugs Back to Top PLUMBING REGULARLY: ____ Check and replace hoses, pipes and fittings in your residence SOON (before you need a plumber on short notice): ____ Find one or more plumbers you think you can trust (see "To select a plumber" below) ____ Determine when the warranty expires FINDING A PLUMBER: ____ Ask neighbors, etc. to recommend a plumber ____ Select potential plumbers from the yellow pages, etc. ____ Call the local Better Business Bureau to see if a potential plumber has had any complaints filed against them ____ Call the potential plumber to determine: - When they're available - How soon they can usually respond - How much they charge, e.g., just to look at a plumbing problem - How to get ahold of them IF YOU HAVE A PLUMBING PROBLEM AND FLOODING IS OCCURRING OR THREATENED: ____ Secure water near the leak (e.g., under the sink) or at the main valve for the residence ____ Determine if the problem item is still under warranty If the item is still under warranty: ____ Determine who is permitted to work on the item IF A PLUMBER RECOMMENDS COSTLY REPAIR(S) OR REPLACEMENT: ____ Get a written estimate including: - What will be done - Warranty - Total cost ____ Get at least one additional estimate from a reputable company Back to Top
